Dense fog disrupts air, rail traffic in Delhi




NEW DELHI: A thick blanket of dense fog engulfed Delhi on Friday, disrupting air and rail traffic and throwing normal life out of gear.

With visibility at the Indira Gandhi International airport down to less than 50 meters, all the departures and arrivals were put on hold since about 6 am.

More than 40 trains have either been cancelled or are running late. Railway officials said 14 trains are delayed, one has been rescheduled and nearly 35 cancelled due to fog.

On Thursday, Delhi shivered in biting cold with the minimum temperature slipping to 6.9 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. The maximum was recorded at 17.3 degrees Celsius, four notches below the normal.

Cold wave continued in India's north with mercury in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil in Ladakh region plunging to the season's lowest at minus 16.4 degrees Celsius.



On Thursday, the MeT office had predicted mainly clear skies on Friday. "The skies will be mainly clear. Shallow to moderate fog would occur at most places during the morning and forenoon. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 19 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively, tomorrow," an official said.


So far, Delhi experienced its coldest day of the season on Wednesday with the day temperature plunging to 15.1 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature settled at 8.9 degrees Celsius.
