Death by Breath: 33 buildings in east fined for flouting norms

Officials said the buildings were fined after an inspection by a team of the Building department of Shahdara (south zone).

The East municipal corporation has fined 33 underconstruction properties for flouting air pollution norms set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Officials said owners of the buildings found flouting norms will have to appear before the Tribunal if they fail to pay the fine of Rs 50,000. Officials said the buildings were fined after an inspection by a team of the Building department of Shahdara (south zone). The properties are located in a number of areas, including Trilokpuri, Pandav Nagar, East End Enclave, Suraj Mal Vihar and Preet Vihar. “Our inspection team found a number of irregularities in construction at these sites. We have fined them as per NGT’s orders,” a spokesperson for East corporation said.

Earlier, the Tribunal had stated that the citizens’ “right to live” must not be compromised for the sake of “small economic gains” and asked authorities to ensure that all construction activity in Delhi NCR — where Ministry of Environment and Forests’ 2010 guidelines for environment-impact assessment weren’t being followed — were halted by Saturday. It issued a detailed set of directions for construction activities to control dust emission at sites. The NGT had said land-owning agencies must ensure compliance of guidelines while giving “sanction of land” and ruled that any person — owner or builder — found violating regulations during construction of building will have to pay a penalty of Rs 50,000 per default and those found violating norms while transporting construction debris or construction material will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000.
