173 polluting units found in Mandoli area,New Delhi
NEW DELHI: A survey of Mandoli Industrial Area has found 173 polluting units and gross violations of pollution control norms. Therefore, the Public Grievances Commission has ordered the filing of criminal cases against violators and told Delhi Pollution Control Committee to start sealing those units. It has also ordered the snapping of water and power connections of these units.
The survey was conducted in January. PGC member N Dilip Kumar stated in his order that an action-taken report submitted by DPCC said its officials, the area SDM and Delhi Police officers inspected these units four times at night. Based on that, three units were issued closure notices under Section 31 of Air Act, 1981. One unit was told to close as it had failed to comply with previous DPCC directions to install pollution control devices.
The survey also found that many units had installed pollution control devices but these needed improvement.
The commission felt the activity was endangering the lives of lakhs of people and needed to be curbed.
The PGC has directed that "evidence be collected about the levels of pollution being caused by a dozen or more selected individuals". "Criminal cases must be registered against them and arrests be made by police. For this purpose, DCP (northeast) should form special teams to provide the requisite support for the action required," the PGC order states.
