MUMBAI: On one of the cleanest days of the year so far, the city woke up to an air quality index (AQI) of 116 on Friday morning. The AQI, however, rose to 137 (in the moderate range) by evening.
According to the real-time monitoring by System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Chembur, one of the most affected suburbs during the fire at the Deonar dumping ground on Friday recorded an AQI of 92 in the evening, which is in the 'good' category.
Most of the other locations too recorded an AQI in the 'good' (0-100) and 'moderate' (101-200) category. Among the nine locations monitored by SAFAR, Colaba and Worli, were the cleanest with AQI levels at 60 and 70 respectively, falling under the 'good' category.
Experts at SAFAR attributed the improved air quality to strong winds. "The wind speed had been approximately 20 km per hour across Mumbai on Thursday and Friday," said an official.
